Rader Detasseling hires approximately 500 people to detassel in July for two to three weeks. Roguing is done for two weeks in June, and 80 to 100 people are hired for those positions. In order to detassel with us, you must be 12 years old before your first day of work. To rogue, you must be at least 14 years old. There is also a clean up crew that consists of the top workers who don't miss tassels and are able to work quickly. The entire crew goes over the field the first time, and the clean up crew the second. This crew works a few more days than the entire crew. Currently, workers are picked up in the towns of Clay Center, Doniphan, Harvard, Hastings, Grand Island and Trumbull. Other towns will be considered for pick-up if there is enough interest. We pay our detasseling team anywhere from $7.25 to $9.50 an hour. Pay is dependent on a rating scale that judges speed, efficiency, consistency and attitude. Below is our pay scale from 2010. It shows what percentage of workers, by age, earned what pay. Pay checks will come from Pioneer. Last year, 12 year olds that worked everyday made $600 to $800. Clean up crew members who rogued made $1500 to $2000. The detasseling day begins at 6:00 am when you are picked up. Pay starts at the pick-up point and ends at the field at check-out time. A normal day runs eight hours, but that can vary. Two 15-minute breaks are offered, one in the morning and one in the afternoon. These are paid breaks, but the lunch break is not. Please bring your own lunch and something to drink. Water will, however, be provided at the field. The weather in Nebraska can vary greatly. Because of this, it is suggested that you wear layers of clothes, wear a poncho if necessary, and bring a cap or hat. Typically, it is cold and wet in the fields in the morning, and hot in the afternoon, so plan accordingly. We would like you to join our team!
